Geocache Description:

The first tower erected on Snowy was a log tower built in 1909.  In 1917 the tower was replaced with a steel tower of 22 feet high and by 1930 tree growth was starting to overtake the tower.  In 1933 the CCC workers added another 20 feet to the tower giving it the total of 42 feet which still stands today.   The  tower is a 42 foot Aermotor LS-40 which has been restored and is open for climbing.

The summit is virtually tree covered yielding no view without climbing the tower.  The trail up passes through a clearing with a great view of Indian Lake about 400 feet before the tower.  For an even better view there is a trail leaving the clearing to the north and continuing to a fantastic view a couple hundred feet away.  The true summit of Snowy is a couple hundred feet to the southwest.  It too is overgrown offering very little view.  Snowy Mountain while only 3899 feet is actually higher than two of the famous 46 peeks.  Nye is 3895 and Couchschraga is actually 3820 yet they both have 46er status and Snowy does not.

The 3.8 mile climb up Snowy starts off very gentle with several rock hopper stream crossings.  One crossing has a beaver dam flooding the trail requiring you to either cross on the dam or venture downstream  for another rock hopper crossing. At approximately 3.25 miles trails starts to climb vigorously up an old wash until you arrive at a lookout 400 feet from the tower.

To find the cache continue past the tower on a fain path (N43 42.003 W74 23.208) to a notch where you will turn right and follow a heard path down to the cache.  This cache is intended to bring you to the old fire tower and not be difficult, I want everyone who makes the climb to find it.  Look under the edge of the large bolder for an ammo can.
