Though its origins are uncertain, the monastery took on its
principal architectural appearance between the 10th and 12th
centuries, though extensions and alterations took place on various
occasions up to the 17th and 18th centuries.
The most important feature is the church, a unique type of
construction in the Catalan Romanesque.
The monastery, the Church of Santa Helena, the remains of the
settlement of the same name and the ruins of Verdera Castle form an
extraordinary monumental site located, moreover, in a spectacular
setting commanding views of Cap de Creus.

Quina ventada!!!
Ahir passejant-nos amb el solet enmig de les restes gregues d'Empúries... i avui gelant-nos amb el romànic! És el tercer cop en deu anys que pujo aquí, perque m'agrada molt el lloc, però per primera vegada em vaig adonar que el monjos sembla que han perdut el seny situant el monestir just en aquell lloc de la montanya, on el sol no arriba mai a l'hivern... ?!?!?! Quina falta de planificació! Pitjor està tota l'arquitectura moderna que fa edificis sencers de vidre que després necessitaran tant d'arie condicionat a l'estiu com de calefacció a l'hivern.... però és que jo estic segura que abans en sabien molt més, de l'acondicionament tèrmic dels edificis! I que ningú em vingui amb allò de les restes de Sant Pere... (raonament de la guia local).
Gràcies :-) Tornaré d'aquí un temps, a veure com canvia l'entorn.
