Though its origins are uncertain, the monastery took on its principal architectural appearance between the 10th and 12th centuries, though extensions and alterations took place on various occasions up to the 17th and 18th centuries.
The most important feature is the church, a unique type of construction in the Catalan Romanesque.
The monastery, the Church of Santa Helena, the remains of the settlement of the same name and the ruins of Verdera Castle form an extraordinary monumental site located, moreover, in a spectacular setting commanding views of Cap de Creus.
