Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the listed coordinates; you must first solve a puzzle, in order to determine the real cache coordinates!

A few years back, our son introduced us to a game called "Settlers of Catan". It has since become a family favorite.

What makes the game so interesting is that each time you play the game, you have the opportunity to create a new and different game board. The game board is constructed by arranging a series of 6-sided game tiles into a larger game board. There are 5 different types of game tiles, each representing a different type of resource: wood (dark green), brick (red), wheat (yellow), wool (light green) and ore (gray); the blue tiles represent water, and are not used as a resource type. Each of the tiles on the game board is assigned a numeric value in the range 2-12, which happen to represent the values which could be rolled using two dice.

Throughout the course of the game, players collect the resources, and then use them to build roads, settlements and cities. Each time the pair of dice is rolled, they are totaled together, and then players are given resources if they have a settlement or a city touching a tile whose numeric value matches the dice roll. Resources are awarded as follows:

  • If a city is adjacent to the tile whose numeric value matches the dice roll, then the player will receive 2 of that resource.
  • If a settlement is adjacent to the tile whose numeric value matches the dice roll, then the player will only receive 1 of that resource.

It is important to point out that for each dice roll, all players are awarded the resources they have earned; the dice roller is not the only person to earn resources based on his dice roll. However, only the dice roller has the opportunity to build roads, settlements or cities during his turn; the other players can only build during their own turn.

To determine the real cache coordinates, you must answer several questions relating to this game. All of the information you need to answer the questions has been provided in the description given above. You will need to use the sample game board shown in the picture below, along with the indicated sequence of dice rolls, to determine the answers to the questions below.

Important Note: In the picture of the gameboard, a city is the larger building, while a settlement is the smaller building.

When answering the following questions, when we say that a '6' was rolled, we are implying that the total shown on the two dice is '6'. Here are the questions you must answer:

A = (# of players receiving a brick resource when '10' is rolled).
B = (Total # of resources distributed when a '6' is rolled).
C = (Total # of resources distributed when a '4' is rolled) + 1.
D = (Total # of WOOD resources distributed when a '4' is rolled).
E = (# of BRICK resources received by the Blue player when a '9' is rolled).
F = (# of WOOD resources received by the Yellow player when a '4' is rolled).
G = (Dice roll required for a total of 9 resources to be distributed).
H = (Total # of resources distributed when an '8' is rolled) + (Total # of resources distributed when a '6' is rolled).
I = (Total # of resources distributed when an '11' is rolled) + (Total # of resources distributed when a '5' is rolled) + 1.
J = (# of players receiving a WHEAT resource when a '3' is rolled) + (Total # of resources distributed when a '3' is rolled).

Plug your answers into the following formula, to determine the final cache coordinates: N44 AB.CDE W123 FG.HIJ

You are searching for a film canister; remember to bring your own pen or pencil! FTF prize is a shiny new $1 coin, courtesy of our friends LiefPhotos and Momiji_Fan. There is parking nearby, but please use stealth when retrieving the cache.

Good luck! If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

Congratulations to Trekks for earning FTF honors!
