Fort Ord Dunes State Park is located on four miles of Monterey Bay
shoreline. The area is open and relatively undeveloped, but has a
military history as a small arms training ground. Over 100
abandoned buildings and military remnants are scattered throughout
the African ice plant-covered dunes. Because the park has not yet
officially opened, access is limited. However, parking and entry
are currently available at the corner of 1st Avenue and 1st Street
just east of Highway 1.
This cache series will allow you to hike the roads and tracks of
the park while watching for those "what is that doing here?" spots.
And keep your eyes open for those numbers!
CACHE DETAILS
Numbered 1 - 12, these large-scale structures dominate the
landscape. Your destination is 11. Afterwards, be sure to check out
the ocean views, but watch for the downed barbed wire in the
vicinity.
The container is a clear plastic Lock & Lock box filled with
small trade items, a pen, and a log.
Special thanks to x-ray tech and "One" (GC16XPH)!
UPDATE: In March 2009, the park officially opened. Hours are
8:00 to a half hour after sunset daily. Admission is free. Parking
is available by taking 1st Avenue to the 8th Street bridge--follow
the signs.
