Located on Bear Island in Lake Winnipesaukee. Some brief bushwacking off the trail is required. You will need a boat to access the island. Parking is available in Church Cove on the south side of the island at the following coordinates: N43 38.011 W071 24.066. Take the trail up to the Chapel and search for the cache there too!. From the chapel, take the trail on the east side of the chapel that begins at the break in the stone wall.
An interesting short side hike off the usual trail brings you to an area long known as Green's Field that today is densely covered with twenty foot red pine trees. Not much of a field anymore! Once you clear the trees, you will enter a more open area where some of the history of the island is apparent. You'll see a number of stone walls and will find the remains of some old farm equipment, a woodstove and box springs and what appears to be ruins from an old brick chimney -- all that's left of a camp of some sort from the era when much of the island was cleared and used to raise cattle.
