This cache is placed as part of the New York State Park Saratoga/Capital District Region Geocache Challenge. There are 44 geocaches hidden within 11 state parks and state historic sites in the Saratoga/Capital District region, and geocachers finding them all will be eligible to enter their names in a drawing for valuable prizes. If you are interested in taking up the challenge, you can pick up a geocache passport at any of the participating parks and sites, or download the passport at www.nysparks.com.

This cache contains a unique stamp which must stay with the cache. Use this stamp to stamp your passport. This stamp is NOT a trade item.

Take a walk down to Woodchuck Walk to the beaver activity area. No need to go as far as Lock 20 and the Empire Lock but you might want to. The Original Erie Canal was built from 1817 to 1825 and was four feet deep, forty feet wide. Governor DeWitt Clinton traveled right through Fort Hunter on this canal in 1825. The towpath trail was about ten feet wide. The horses or mules would walk as a pace of four miles an hour on the towpath pulling the boats behind them. A steersman on board the boat made sure that the boat didn’t crash into the sides of the canal. Remember to watch for the beavers and woodchucks.

The cache is an easy typical find meant for first time geocachers or a fast smiley face for the die hard cacher. Easy access from the bike trail. Closest parking is at the Fort Hunter Fire House; however, its also an easy level walk from the Visitor Center. The items in the cache are park souvenirs and do not need to be replaced with a trade item.
