Park on the Malham Road just above Langcliffe. This area is the Winskill Stones Reserve, which has been purchased by Plantlife and dedicated to the memory of Geoff Hamilton who campaigned in his broadcasts for the preservation of the limestone pavements. Walk from here across the road where you will see what must be the most photographed tree in the Dales, emerging from a section of pavements.

Go down the track and across the cattle grid. In the right of the track , there is a boulder, known as an 'erratic'. This is a Silurian mudstone boulder, which was dumped by a melting glacier about twelve thousand years ago. It is known locally as Samson's Toe. Ariel photographs have revealed an Iron Age co-axial field system on the land to your right.
Fantastic views of Penyghent, Ingleborough and down the Ribble Valley to langcliffe and Settle.
Although this is an easy hop, skip and a jump for those who like that sort of caching. It is on the route of the 'Elgar Way', details of which can be purchased from Tourist Information in Settle. This 13 mile round walk takes in several local caches - Dead Man's Cave, Stainforth Foss, Catrigg Force, Hoffmann's Kiln, Samson's Toe, Victoria Caves, Scaleber Force. (I am going to shortly add this to the Geo-Hike web site.)
