THE HISTORIC FORT is a Historical Landmark located in Taft, CA. The
location of the fort is easy to locate as is the cache, parking
within 50 feet and wheel chair accessible.
The difficulty of 1.5 is because of cache size only. The cache is a
micro that will blend in, but easy to spot. Bring your own pen and
you might want to bring an extraction tool (tweezers). If you are
not from the area, you may not be aware of the impact The Historic
Fort has made on this area over the years. The following is a brief
history of The Fort. The Fort covers nearly three acres and
measures 360 feet by 200 feet, over 1,000 feet around the outside
walls. The walls are 14 feet high. It was built of native adobe mud
bricks made at the site. The central building and the auditorium
are patterned after Sutter's Fort in Sacramento, CA, which was
built in 1840. In 1940, it held all federal, state, and county
offices. The South wing was the county hospital where many babies
were born here until 1951. The original auditorium was damaged in
the 1952 earthquake, and was rebuilt to safety specifications.
During World War II, The Fort held the local draft board office
where all local soldiers received their call-up notices and
discharge papers. Thousands of local children received their
vaccinations and polio vaccine at the County Health Clinic held at
The Fort. In 1980, a building study was done due to large cracks in
the outside walls. The Fort was declared 'unsafe for a major
earthquake' and all county offces were moved, leaving it vacant for
several years. The Fort was dedicated as a State Historic Landmark
on March 8, 1980 and was listed in the National Register of
Historic Places on July 22, 1981. In 1985, The Fort was given to
the West Kern Oil Museum. Seven years later, in December 1992, The
Fort Preservation Society was formed and became the owner of The
Fort. Currently it houses several businesses and many weddings and
parties are held at the Fort. To learn more about the Historic Fort
