Geocache Description:

In the heart of the Fayette Cong, there will be a weekend event cache on May 12-14, 2006 at Camp Carmel. This camp has been operated by a joint association of the Ten Mile Baptist Church Association and Monongahela Baptist Church Association since approximately 1953. This event cache will have several aspects including volunteer work, camping, CITO, caching, and potato guns.

UPDATE - 5/5/06 Hi All – to this point we will be having a rather small event cache. Maybe some people are on the fence and about to confirm? If so, please do so asap! I will be without internet access beginning from 5/11/05 until after the event, so if you have any last minute questions, please call my cell phone (seven two four – seven four seven – four four two seven).

And now for the updates:

Work Projects – we will be doing some clean up of littered areas, moving 3 of the Camp’s cabins, cutting firewood, and painting benches/picnic tables.

Fun - For the fun portion of the event, there are two big things to note. There is a new, 4 star terrain, two part multi adjacent to the location of the event cache. It should be approved by that weekend and will be a fun one for people attending this event. Second, I am working on getting permission to complete the Liston School Road Cache as part of the weekend. Honestly I think it should not be a problem doing so, but as with anything of this nature, I cannot guarantee it. If that awesome cache does have to go by the wayside (hopefully not!) this will be a fun way to maybe have a last hurrah for it! I will also have a few temp caches placed around camp for everyone's fun. Also, on Saturday night I have three give-aways that will be dispersed based on a gps game / hunt of some form.

In short, I hope to see a flood of people logging to say they will be able to make it to this event. I am sure all will have a great time. If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know!

This family oriented event will provide fun and fellowship for people of all ages and interests!

Schedule-

Friday- Camping / camp fire / general socialization. Camping will be available in the Camp’s cabins, and there is more than enough space for tents. And if it is a clear night, you cannot beat sleeping out in the open on the Camp’s basketball court which has a remarkable view of the mountain night sky. Hot showers and flush toilets are available in the Camp’s bath house.

Saturday- Work! Break into groups, divide, conquer and get the camp ready for the season. Typically in the spring they organize several work weekends in order to prep the camp for the coming summer camping season. We would be working in conjunction with these work weekends planned by the Camp. This year's projects include: building a picnic shelter, road work, update the refrigeration in the kitchen, plumbing, and painting. On top of the projects listed, the camp always needs firewood cut and split and grass mowed. Take the evening to enjoy the area right around camp or even head up onto the mountain to do the nearby caches, courtesy of Quest Master and Fishin' Magician / Flippin' Dolphin.

Sunday- Fun! Head out biking on the Yough trail or canoe across the river and attempt QM’s Hampton Cache. There are numerous options for activities for people on Sunday including caching, biking, hiking, off-roading, and swimming. We can break out the potato guns or even bring sporting clays / thrower and shoot some clay birdies.

Other Noteworthy Items-

General Information- For more information on the camp, please see their website (Camp Carmel) .

Logistics- Due to the Camp’s location, there will be several logistical issues to address when attending this event. First, I recommend a high clearance vehicle for driving to the cache as the road is full of large rocks and potholes. Cars can make it with careful driving, but I have seen several lose their oil pans on the numerous rocks in the road. Second, there is at least one, possible two locked gates you will need to come through to get to the cache. As the event gets closer and I see how many people will be attending, I will determine how we will handle this. If you are only able to attend part of the event, these gates will provide a nuisance, but we will do the best to accommodate everyone.

Food- For the time being, I am leaving food as each person/family’s responsibility. I should be able to have a couple gas grills available for use, and there are several fire rings available for cooking over the fire. Once we have an idea of the size of the group, this may change. Also please note this event is being held at a church camp and alcohol is prohibited.

Electricity- There is no electricity at the camp; however, there will be a generator available for limited use.

Cell Phones- As the camp is nestled deep in the valley alone the Yough River, cell phone coverage tends to be weak.

Weather- Given the camp is nestled in the valley of the mountains, you can expect some cool nights so please dress and plan according.

Local Caches- As for the local caches to the camp, take a look at QM's Liston School Road and look at the surrounding caches. Within 15 miles of this cache are some of the most praised caches in South Western PA.

What you need to do now- Keep your schedule open! If you think you be able to make or have any questions, please feel free to contact me either via posting to the cache page or via email. If you have any suggestions, comments, or ideas, please let me know!

Also, discussion for this event cache can be seen at the Trigo Yahoo Group (Tri-Go) If you plan to attend, please add this cache to your watchlist so you will receive any updates that I post to the cache page. This event will evolve as plans begin to finalize and the event approaches.
