The cache is about ½ mile up a gentle gravely slope. It’s an easy 15-minute walk if you’re in a hurry… or much longer if you stop to enjoy all the various rocks, cacti, and scrub bushes that you’ll be meandering around. We saw some places, a few hundred square feet in area, which had thousands of one-inch to two-inch high baby cacti. The recent rains made the barrel cacti look bloated. Enjoy the search!
Take exit 122 from I-15 at Mesquite, Nevada. Go south to the first traffic light. Turn left onto Hillside Drive and you're on your own.
Instructions on how to see the “Cowboy on the Mountain” are inside the cache. Local ranchers formed the cowboy shape unintentionally 12 – 15 years ago. They were trying to create a pathway so their cattle could easily get up and down the mountain to an area with water. Their controlled burn of the thick growing scrub oak and manzanita was not successful but it did form the shape you see today.
