The Texas Spirit Quest
is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries, tombstones and local lore.
NOTE: The cache is NOT directly by the cemetery! To find the site, walk about 120 feet away from the house. You MIGHT see a headstone about 25 feet inside the tree line. I’ve spotted it before, but not today on a follow-up visit on 07/26/20. However, a passing local confirmed it’s there.
This is a primarily Anglo cemetery with 26 interments ranging from 1881 to 1914. The years 1898 and 1899 appear to have been brutal, with seven burials taking place in that time period. Amongst others, there are five Ulbrichs laid to rest here, along with four Reeds, perhaps from the family that gave nearby Reedville its name.
Obviously, the site is massively overgrown. If you look more or less directly from the cache and into the woods, you'll see at least one headstone about 25 feet away from the fence line. There may also be some visible markers a little to the left. The area is littered with beer bottles and other debris. Do not be alarmed if you hear gunfire close at hand, as the neighbors seem fond of a little recreational shooting. As always, any refinements to the listed coordinates are welcomed.
