Directions to Lower Arroyo Park: In Pasadena, from the intersection
of California and Orange Grove, head west on California, down the
hill until it ends at Arroyo Blvd. Turn right (North) on Arroyo 0.2
miles until you see the sign on the left for "Lower Arroyo Park".
Turn left here, down the hill, and park in the lot past the casting
pond. The approximate coordinates of the parking area are: N 34
08.422, W 118 10.038.
The Lower Arroyo Trail is a 4 mile loop. The terrain is almost
completely flat, with minimal elevation changes. Some of the Caches
require light bush-whacking.
There are additional entrances to the loop from Arroyo Blvd,
from San Pasqual Ave., and from La Loma Road. We have tried to keep
the caches clear of Poison Oak, but it moves year to year and is
very plentiful in the Arroyo, so please be careful, and be aware of
your surroundings.
The park is fairly busy on the weekends, with several joggers,
people walking dogs, archers, and a few people at the casting pond.
Parking is usually not an issue, but the lot can get crowded
mid-mornings on weekends when the archery range seems to be most
active. The Sheriff’s Department does patrol the area
regularly on horse-back.
There are restroom facilities by the casting pond. There are a
couple of emergency telephones, several benchs, and a drinking
fountain (in the archery range), but we would suggest taking a good
supply of water with you. There is very little tree cover, and the
area can get quite hot in the summer.
Additional Lower Arroyo Caches which can be easily done in
conjunction with the loop are:
