Geocache Description:

The second of our series is located in the nice little town of Hegins. Parking is available at N 40* 38.829’ W 076* 30.962’ at the east end of the building on the blacktop. To start your journey walk to the end of the chain-link fence and turn left. Then follow the path and your GPS.

Now here’s a little history on the town: Hegins, formerly known as Heginsville, was established in 1858 when the post-office was established (mail was brought in 3 times each week via stagecoach). The earliest known settlement was of a half-breed Indian named Hager in 1757. From the 1700’s to the 1800’s, the progress of settlers was slow and the people had to rely on neighbors for local improvements and for their livelihood. This was a small town filled with farms and mills. The first painted building occurred in 1814 and people came from far distances to see it. The first hotel opened in 1827 with prices like…meal - $.25, whiskey - $.03/glass, cigar - 4 for $.01. In 1857 the first school was established. A log church was built in 1871 but in 1874 was torn down and a brick church was built which is now Frieden’s Lutheran Church.Today, Hegins is known as “the Labor Day Pigeon Shoot Town.” Throughout the 1980’s and ’90’s, the people of Hegins would gather at the local park and have a pigeon shoot. The money raised from this event was poured back into the upkeep of the park. This ended in 1999 when the town couldn’t compete with all of the protestors.

When looking for this cache, there may be times when the GPS will steer you wrong (because of tree cover) but just get a good signal and keep moving. The only bushwhacking needed is the last 50 feet, otherwise follow the trails.
