Geocache Description:

Very close to the war memorial, along a public bridleway which can get muddy in the winter when horses have been using the path regularly

The Cache is hidden by a memorial for the US 184th AAA Battery, the memorial is on a bridleway alongside Lippitts Hill Camp which is now owned by the Metropolitan Police. The site first saw action in the First World War as an anti-aircraft site, then becoming a army training camp. Whilst remaining as an anti aircraft battery during the Second World War it eventually became a POW camp housing mainly Italian and German prisoners until 1948. After the war it became an anti aircraft operations room serving the London North Gun Defended Area in No 1 Group. By the 1960’s it had become surplus to requirements and was acquired by the Metropolitan Police and they have used it for various purposes over the years. Looking through the trees from the bridleway and the memorial you can still the gun pits and concrete structures from the battery that have remained since the war. Please be aware of noise coming from the camp as it is used for firearms training, police dogs and a base for the helicopters. It’s a micro cache, which is a tube similar to a cigar tube, you will need a pen or pencil to sign the log.
