As a decrepit father takes delight
When that churl Death my bones with dust shall cover,
Say I, made lame by Fortune's dearest spite,
These poor rude lines of thy deceased lover.
So thou be good, slander doth but approve
By unions married, to offend thine ear.
For canker vice, the sweetest buds doth love
In singleness the parts that thou shouldst bear.
That poor retention could not so much hold,
But scorn'd, like old men of less truth than tongue.
Therefore to give them from me was I bold,
And stretched the metre of an antique song:
O cunning Love! with tears thou keep'st me blind,
Lest eyes well-seeing thy foul faults should find.
