Having survived a fire in which he had been badly burned and was taken to a Santa Fe hospital for treatment. The story of his survival was picked up by the national news services and featured in an edition of Life Magazine. He became an instant celebrity and gained worldwide fame. Soon he was adopted, had a name change and moved to Washington, D.C., where he lived out the remainder of his life. Upon his death his remains were returned to his original birthplace in New Mexico. During his lifetime this pop culture icon was active in public service doing radio shows in the 1950s with the likes of Bing Crosby, Art Linkletter, Dinah Shore, Roy Rogers, and many others. In 1966 a movie about this American folk hero was released on NBC, and in 1984 he was honored with a U.S. postage stamp. A song was also written about him in 1952. Who was he?
