The White Mountains' Deep Springs Valley used to be underwater. This was during the Cambrian Period 544 to 505 million years ago. During this era, life forms multiplied dramatically in quantity and variety in these Cambrian seas. There were more marine animals living in the Cambrian seas than today's oceans. The animals of the Cambrian had hard shells or skeletons made of calcium carbonate. Come and enjoy what is left of the seashore in the mountains!
Getting to the lake is a little tricky.
Some people may prefer driving the dirt road by 4WD. If you have descent tire treads, a 2WD will get you there and back. There are a variety of ways to drive to the cache, although some of the routes are on deeply rutted road.
The below route is on a good road with minimal rutting. I drove my Bronco II in 2WD without any trouble. The 4 mile dirt road is in fine shape, especially after the first quarter mile from 168.
Good 4 mile route:
Leave 168 at the Dirt Road to south *Zero Odometer*
N 37° 19.109 W 118° 05.489
Soon after, go through the cow gate-be sure to close it after passing through.
N 37° 19.076 W 118° 05.522
At about .2 from 168, make a left at a fork
N 37° 18.994 W 118° 05.623
At about 2.9 from 168, bear left at fork
N 37° 17.436 W 118° 04.340
At about 3.85 from 168, turn right at intersection
N 37° 17.278 W 118° 03.315
The cache container is a plastic screw-on lid container. The top is 3½" wide. The height is 8½" tall.
