Geocache Description:

This is a virtual geocache located inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Physical geocaches are not allowed inside the park. The coordinates were taken with 21 feet accuracy but the tree cover is thick so just be patient with your gps, it should eventually lead you to this spot.

From the Sugarlands Vistor's Center, take the Little River Road 6 miles and turn left towards the Elkmont campground. Then take the road opposite the campground which leads to the Elkmont Nature Trail. It's possible to drive right up to this virtual geocache location, just follow the loop road and your GPS. Or park and enjoy the hike.

Elkmont got it's start in the early 1900's as a logging town, home to the Little River Lumber Company. The Little River Railroad, originally built as a logging train, was soon bringing the wealthy and elite from Knoxville, Maryville, and Chattanooga to hunt and fish. In 1910, the lumber company deeded 50 acres to the Appalachian Club, on which the group built a clubhouse. The Appalachian Club was a hunting and fishing club and soon the men's womenfolk heard of the beautiful forests of Elkmont and began to follow their men on their weekend excursions. Elkmont evolved into a summer resort for the socially prominent and wealthy members of the surrounding areas. Many cottages and homes were built, along with a boarding house, church, theatre, hotel, and post office.

The above coordinates will bring you to this deserted summer resort and to the front of one of these cottages. The coordinates were taken at the steps that lead up from the lane. There seems to be something special and unique about this particular cottage. It's kind of different from the rest. It makes me wonder about who exactly came here to spend their weekends and summers.

To claim this virtual geocache as a find, email me the answers to the following questions:

1. How many stone steps lead from the road to the front yard of this cottage?

2. Tell me what makes this cottage unique and different from the rest. Or just tell me what you see beyond those stone steps.

These buildings have been condemed by the Park Service and are off limits to the public. Please do not enter the cottage. You can find this virtual cache without ever leaving your car or the lane you hiked in on.

After finding this cache, take the time to walk around the area. Elkmont Cabins is another virtual geocache in the nearby vicinity. I hope you'll find it too. Pack a lunch and have a picnic while imagining what it would have been like to spend your summers here.

And please remember, to always Leave No Trace.
