Geocache Description:

Broadmoor -  an area of around 53 acres of beautiful moorland in rural Berkshire

The Berkshire Moors are a largely forgotten yet unique part of the county's natural landscape. Although much built upon, they still survive in part and can be best viewed on foot. There were originally in excess of a dozen individual moors, but only a few now survive (in name at least)... Wildmoor, Owlsmoor, Longmoor.

Broadmoor is an open area of moor situated just south of Crowthorne and to the west of Swinley Forest. It is usually remembered for its hospital, which towers over the surrounding countryside.

The hospital was originally named Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, and had been built following the Criminal Lunatics Act of 1860.  The first patients to arrive there were 95 women in 1863, with male patients arriving the following year.

The mental health act of 1959 (which came into operation in 1960) changed the name to Broadmoor Hospital, making it into a special hospital for psychiatric patients "of dangerous, violent or criminal propensities", its role being to treat these patients.

Perhaps the most notorious guest currently checked-in is Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, who was convicted in 1981 for the murder of 13 women.

More about the hospital can be read on the BBC profile page

Onto the cache...

The coordinates are for parking and not for the cache.

Best approach is from Crowthorne village.  From the High Street and Sandhurst Road junction, take the Lower Broadmoor Road and continue right to the end and its junction with Eastern Lane.  There is parking for a few cars here.

From the parking spot you will see nearby a telegraph pole.  On the pole are four numbers, call them ABCD.

Final cache is at N51 21.(B*2)(A*2)(C-1)  W0 46.(D-1)(C-5)(A+1)

This is a simple multi and should take no longer than 30-40 minutes with a walk down a pleasant footpath and country lane.  In summer months the view of Broadmoor is rather constricted by trees, but in winter months, the view is outstanding. There are a couple of stiles to negotiate on route, so probably not suitable for pushchairs.

The cache is a large ammo-box containing the usual goodies, and the first-to-find prize is an unregistered TB-tag.

Good luck!
