This was the first
frame schoolhouse built in Neva (1883). It was constructed of
lumber sawed from the logs at the site of the school by the
settlers themselves. Originally the schoolhouse had one room with
three windows on each side and a single door on the south end.
Later an addition with two windows on each side, a small cloak
room, and double doors at the entrance were added. At times the
attendance of this little school was up to 90 children. Sara Leslie
was the first teacher and my grandfather was on the school board in
those early years. It is the oldest still standing in Langlade
County. In 1979 a project was begun by the Old School Restoration
Committee to restore and refurnish the building. It is open on
weekends during the summer months. The belltower from the old
Deerbrook Graded School (grades 1-9), once located a half mile west
of here, was also placed on this site. This school was a two-story
brick building constructed in 1904 and closed with the
consolidation of all the old country schools in 1960. With its
closing, it quickly fell into disrepair and was demolished. I spent
my first six years of grade school here. I remember how thrilled I
was to move to the second floor in 6th grade with the bigger
kids…that didn’t last long! Congratulations to
cbiij for the FTF.
