The trail runs along the Fort River from Groff Park (near Route
116) to the Norwottuck Rail Trail where it crosses over South East
Street. There are some nice vistas east of the cache (looking north
to the Amherst College cross-country course) and west (looking
south) as well as a scenic brook. The land is largely owned by
Amherst College, which leases some of it to farmers and otherwise
maintains its own southerly view unspoiled.
There is parking at Groff Park (42° 21.470 N, 72° 31.066 W) and
also a lot for the Rail Trail at the South East Street end of Mill
Lane (42° 21.402 N, 72° 30.301 W). Please use one of these
parking spots and approach the cache on the trail. If you
try to bushwhack in from the closest point on Mill Lane, you will
be on posted private property. If you stick to the trail until
you're close, you'll be fine.
To make a loop, walk the whole trail and return to your parking
along Mill Lane. (The full trail is about a mile.) You can also go
a little way down the Rail Trail to the Fort River Loop Trail,
another very enjoyable route. Maps of Amherst conservation land and
trails are available at A.J. Hastings on the common in the center
of Amherst, but they shouldn't be necessary for finding this
cache.
Much of the initial contents of the cache (including the
original container) came from the "cache starter kit" I drew for at
the Stanley Park Geo Meet and Greet in fall 2003, hence the credit
to organizers Katscache.
