This Geocache is situated on the Anglesey Coastal Path and may be accessed by following the path west from the small village of Dwyran or south from Pen Lôn.
The Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path is a 125 mile route that circumnavigates the island, passing through the largest designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Wales.
Recommended parking for the cache is at 53 09.571N 004 20.961W. This is the layby situated opposite the White Lodge Café. From here walk back about 200 yrds towards the houses on the same side as the cafe, this will lead you to the sign-posted Anglesey Coastal Path.
The cache site consists of the set of Large Stepping Stones across the tidal River Braint, against the backdrop of the fantastic scenery of the Snowdonia national park and the outlying silhouette of the Lleyn Peninsula.
There is very little documentation detailing the construction of the Stepping Stones or of the origin of the limestone used. There are 28 large quarried blocks which are estimated to be in the region of 3 tonnes each.
It is believed that they were placed in order to provide a safe river crossing at any state of the tide for local villagers.
Before road and rail, it would have been closer for the nearby villagers to obtain supplies from Caernarfon than any Anglesey town. The ferry across the treacherous waters of the Menai Strait ran from Tal-y-foel to Caernarfon and the stepping stones would have been a welcome relief on an already strenuous journey.
The cache is not situated on the stones themselves but you will have to step across to find the cache site. It consists of a lockable box in camouflaged bag with log book and usual swappable items - there is a pencil and sharpener included – please leave these for future use.
