Geocache Description:

This puzzle cache will take you around Girard square, show you some of our interesting history & end at another of our beautiful, historic buildings.

The posted co-ordinates are the location of the 1st clue.  There is plenty of parking nearby & the final cache is within easy walking distance.

N ab cd.e0g / W 0ij 5l.mno - just replace each letter in the coordinate puzzle with the appropriate number!

1.     Crawford County was established February 1a 1867.

2.     Stay where you are & look to the West.  The building on the corner used to be the Press Block.  What is the year shown on that building?  188j.

3.     N 37°30.563 / W 094°50.583 – This was the First State Bank of Girard & was owned by the state’s 1st woman banker, Sarah A. Haldeman.  It was erected by Frank Playter in 187d.

4.     N 37º30.579 / W 094º50.516 – c = Chau Doc.
Look around this fantastic memorial -
"The 281st Assault Helicopter Company was the first Special Operations Aviation Unit in the World, and is the predecessor of the current U.S. Army special operations active duty aviation regiment -- the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, known as the 'Night Stalkers.' "  Buck Yancey. There’s another cache here too, but it’s really well hidden – can you find it?

5.     It was flown by Rat Pack o5

6.     Tail #s are KS-NG g-13632

7.     N 37º30.604 / W 094º50.495 – This was the 1st Girard home of J.A. Wayland’s Socialist Newspaper, The Appeal To Reason 189b

8.  N 37º30.639 / W 094º50.536 – This structure was dedicated to the City of Girard in 1989, but which month? Answer goes in m.

9.  Stay where you are & look to the North – what year is on the building across the road? 19l2. (That’s a letter L & it’s where your answer goes in the cache code J)

10.  N 37º30.639 / W 094º50.556 – The Crawford County Time Capsule was sealed Apr 29 19e7 & is due to be re-opened 2n67

11.  N 37º30.580 / W 094º50.689 – The last clue is a short walk from the square.  This beautiful building is on the National Register of Historic Places.  It is built in the Classic Revival style & has architectural, social history & educational significance.  It was built circa. 1i06.

You should now have the co-ordinates for the final stage – the actual cache!

The final cache is on public ground & does have permission to be there (if you find yourself in a private yard, you’re in the wrong spot!). However, please be respectful of the area & leave it in as good condition (or better!) as you found it, so that we can continue to have our cache here. This is also a busy spot, so use your BEST stealth & re-hiding skills so it doesn’t get stolen.

The cache itself has had several incarnations - it was a big ammo can at one time, but that was stolen. We replaced it with a decon container - stolen. Then we used a plastic lock&lock container - container stolen & contents scattered all over the ground. It is now a small pill bottle (cheap & cheerful for now, in case the vandals strike again). PLEASE make sure you hide it as well as possible when you leave & be as sneaky as possible to confound the muggles.

Thank you!!!

Congratulations to topgun5403 & Co-Pilot Marty for FTF!!! Thank you, guys!!! :)
