This section of the North Country National Scenic Trail, which
crosses the Marengo semi-primitive roadless area in the Chequamegon
National Forest is particularly scenic with many overlooks and
interesting sites, including the Swedish Settlement. The Swedish
Settlement is about a 1.5 mile one way hike from the parking area
along Forest Road 202 near Grand View so dress your feet
appropriately and be prepared for a nice hike with moderate
elevation changes.
This spot, near the Marengo River, was settled by three Swedish
families in the late 1800's. The remains of their homesteads and
other artifacts are still visible amongst the trees and brush
growing up around them. I've been able to count four foundations
and countless items laying around. Are there more? Take a minute to
look around and explore for yourself!
The cache itself is a rubbermaid container filled with
traditional goodies. I've listed it as winter friendly as we placed
it in January and snowshoed in without any difficulty. Just please
be prepared and bring water! Especially during Summer. Since we
placed it in Winter the underbrush was gone so I hope there are no
thorns. If there are I apologize! Also, there are two more
overlooks within .5 miles East of the Settlement. If time permits,
don't pass them up!
