Back in the “buffalo days” this area was a favoured camping ground for regional Indian tribes. Traders and trapers established Fort Slideout nearby in the early 1870s. Trading bison hides and beaver pelts for guns, ammunition and booze, the post was a busy place until the arrival of the North-West Mounted Police in the neighbourhood in 1874.
Traders and hunters traveled thru this land for years. Different members of the Blackfoot indian tribes have been and still are the prominient residents.
The influence of wars and the coming of the railroad both had influiences on the region. The discovery of gold also had an impact on life on this prarrie.
Nothing affects life here more than the weather. Wind and rain can bring everything to a halt. The cold winters slow everything to a crawl. Still today life on the prarrie can be tough even for the most hardened farmer or rancher. It is indeed a tough row to hoe!
