Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Turtle Back Rock section of South Mt. Reservation.

Park in the lot off Walker Rd. in West Orange. Find the trailhead and follow the orange & white markers. Follow this trail to the end. Walk out onto the boulders until you are just one step away from becoming Northfield Ave. roadkill. Hold onto your kids & watch your dog. It's a pretty decent drop. Now look at the boulder you're standing on. There are lines etched into the surface that resemble a turtles' shell (hence the name). All of the boulders in this area have the same markings. Basalt lava once flowed through this rift valley (Newark Basin, Piedmont). When the basaltic traprock cooled, it fractured into small hexagonal blocks. Minerals filled in the cracks, then erosion wore away the basalt faster than the minerals. The resulting pattern was rock similar to the back of a turtle. Enough of the local geology lesson. You have the coordinates. Go find your cache. Weird NJ fans can check out Vol. 11 page 48.
