Neptune's Trident Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

MedicOne: Time for this one to go for a lot of reasons. Number one there doesn't seem to be any interest or there are no more diving cachers. Number two - construction of the breakwater has resulted in invalidation of the underwater instructions. I'll put it back next spring - perhaps as a terracache this time.

Geocache Description:

Cache is located in Farragut State Park at the Eagle Boat Landing. I've placed four caches on mountain tops surrounding Lake Pend Oreille Idaho. This cache is located BENEATH the waters of this majestic lake. Eagle Landing is a popular dive training location for local area divers.

This cache is in two parts. Part one consists of a scuba dive to locate a waypoint which will direct you to the final which is located on land a short distance from the dive site. You must do the dive to log this cache.

I planned this dive to be simple and straight forward so that any Open Water certified diver can complete it; no advanced training or specialty certifications are required. Be aware, however, that this ain't Fiji! It can be dark, cold, and murky at these depths with water temp often 40 degrees Fahrenheit or less. Some cold water experience is highly advised! I used a drysuit and recorded the water temp at 48 degrees on a 98 degree summer day. For current conditions click here: Lake Pend Oreille Weather: Current Conditions

The cache was set at summer high pool of 2062 feet. Check local newspapers for lake depth and adjust your dive depths accordingly as lake depth varies from summer to winter. Start your dive at the second or third set of pilings on the west side of the west breakwater. The cache waypoint is located just past the last set of pilings on the west side of the breakwater. The bottom of these three pilings has some steel cabling on the ground; summer pool bottom depth here is 40 feet. Proceed on a heading of 160 degrees for ten fin kicks. There you'll find a small rock cairn that I constructed. Beneath this cairn is a flat rock about 2' x 3'. The WP is on the SE corner of this rock hidden by a round black rock at a depth of 48'. It is a clear plastic drybox with yellow engraved tags attached by cable to a two pound weight. No need to open box to record coordinates. As a technique shoot a compass heading for the pilings while on land and base your dive on those headings. Water depth drops rapidly to well below 200 feet just past the cache location. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DIVE DEEPER THAN 60 FEET! IF YOU HIT THAT DEPTH YOU ARE LOST AND NEED TO MAKE IMMEDIATE AND POSITIVE CORRECTIONS. Plan your dive, dive your plan. Dive safe, enjoy the dive/hunt, don't forget your safety stop.

As is my custom I've placed in the final cache a Skydiver T-shirt appropriate to the theme of this cache as a trade item for that lucky first finder - see it here Scuba Cacher . The cache contains some very nice scuba related items including free air fills from Atlantis Aquatics.
