Frodo: "I will take the Ring to Mordor. Though — I do not know
the way."
I came across
a map of Castle Rock for rock-climbers and I saw a reference
to Mount Doom! Being the Tolkien nutter that I am I couldn't resist trying to place a
cache nearby.
Sam: FRODO!
Frodo: I'm here Sam.
Sam: Destroy it!
[Frodo holds the ring on its chain over the edge of the pit]
Sam: Go on! Now! Throw it in the fire!
[Frodo stares at the ring, the ring whispers to him]
Sam: What are you waiting for? Just let it go!
[Frodo turns and looks at Sam]
Frodo: The ring is mine.
[He snaps the chain and approaches the ring to his finger]
Sam: No... no...
[Frodo slips the ring on and vanishes]
Sam: NO!
The cache is off trail and is a couple of hundred feet from
Mount Doom on a grassy wooded slope. While I came up from Saratoga
Gap Trail, the easiest approach is from the Ridge Trail.
He followed Sam into Sammath Naur and struck him on the head
from behind. Frodo had claimed the Ring and put it on, but Gollum
found him and the two struggled desperately on the edge of the
Cracks of Doom. Then Gollum bit off Frodo's finger and he had the
Ring in his possession at last. Distracted in his joy, Gollum lost
his balance and fell over the edge into the fiery chasm below. The
Ring was destroyed and Gollum was killed. His last word as he fell
was, "Precious!"
Enjoy! And happy caching!
