Meet Fort Ord Dunes State Park!
Fort Ord Dunes State Park is located on four miles of Monterey Bay shoreline. The area is open and relatively undeveloped, but has a military history as a small arms training ground. Over 100 abandoned buildings and military remnants are scattered throughout the African ice plant-covered dunes. Because the park has not yet officially opened, access is limited. However, parking and entry are currently available on the corner of 1st Avenue and 1st Street just east of Highway 1.

This cache series will allow you to hike the roads and tracks of the park while watching for those "what is that doing here?" spots. And keep your eyes open for those numbers!

CACHE DETAILS
Although not officially "numbered remains," these Seven Guardians of the Dune stand as stark sentinels of the past.

To reach this cache, it will be necessary to bushwhack across the landscape. The container is hidden just east/northeast of the seven.

The container is a clear plastic Lock & Lock box filled with trade items, a log, and a pen. Please take care with the rehide--uncamo'd plastic creates a glare which can be seen for miles!

UPDATE: In March 2009, the park officially opened. Hours are 8:00 to a half hour after sunset daily. Admission is free. Parking is available by taking 1st Avenue to the 8th Street bridge--follow the signs.

12:15 Out in Marina with "fast fred" for a New Years day caching adventure. We did quite a number of the dunes caches while in the area today. Nice lock n locks should hold up for many years to come. Thanks for the geo fun!

It was a foggy day and cool but a very nice walk along the dunes. Easy find. We took the post-it and left a dinosaur.
