Geocache Description:

Pi Day Cache. This Cache is a Multi-Cache located in and around the Hartly Nature Center. Parking is best in the main lot.

The coordinates listed above are not where the first stage is located. Do not look for the cache at this location.

I decided to place this multi cache to celebrate Pi day. Pi day is celebrated on March 14 th (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi_Day). Get it, 3.14 is = to Pi, 3/14 is March 14th.

I am placing this as part of my school project explaining how math is used in the Global Positioning System to calculate trilateration with spheres.

Originally this cache had math problems at each stage. I have reduced it to a multi-cache that uses one mathematical problem to lead you to your first destination. After that the coordinates for the other stages will be hidden in small containers along the way. The problem should be fairly easy to solve, as it is sixth grade level. Make sure to use a calculator, paper, a writing utensil, and possibly a sixth grader to help. The older members of Treasure_Seekers4 were stumped on this one, but I helped them out.

First to find prize is $3.14 in honor of Pi day. Have a slice of Pie on me!

Here is the math problem that will give you the coordinates to the first container:

Bryce, Duane, Julianna, and Sonya share a 40 feet x 48 feet rectangular portion of the community garden in their neighborhood. Within this space, each has an individual rectangular garden plot.

  • Bryce is the only one with a square plot. Its area is 1/2 the area of Duane’s.
  • The area of Bryce’s plot is 2/3 the area of Julianna’s garden. Their plots have one side in common.
  • Sonya’s garden has an area twice that of Julianna’s Garden.
  • The area of Julianna’s garden = (A)

Input (A) in to the problem below

(A) – 126 = (B)
1st Container Location:
N 46 50.(B)
