Geocache Description:

The Artic Lookout, a fine example of the forest fire lookout, was built about six miles south of Aberdeen near the town of Artic.

The Washington State Division of Forestry built this lookout in 1948, shortly after WWII. Originally, it was a 50' pole tower with a 12x12' slant-walled cabin. In 1952 the lookout was rebuilt as a 40' wooden live-in. Sadly, it was destroyed in 1973.

Not much remains, but a pile of the original cement pier blocks can be easily found, and are visible from the cache's ground zero. Oh, and there is an enjoyable view, too.

About this cache:
  • 'Artic' is a correct spelling. It and 'Arctic' have both been used in the past.
  • This cache is on publicly accessible Weyerhaeuser land. Access is granted to the public only during weekends and only during daylight hours. On our way in, we found a road closed sign due to extreme fire danger. Use your own best judgment in this area. It was the middle of February, it was wet, and there was snow in the vicinity when we placed this cache.
  • I would recommend you NOT use your nicest car on this trip. The roads are fine for cars, but the last little bit seems somewhat brushy and may leave extra pinstipes on that nice paint job!
  • You are looking for a regular Lock 'n' Lock under a classic NW location.
  • There is a worthwhile FTF prize.
