The Don't Panic trilogy
of caches are based on the Hitchhiker series of books by the
late Douglas Adams.
At this cache location, you will be searching for a standard 50
cal. ammo can painted somewhat like, but not quite, but pretty
close to camouflage. In it you will find standard items like a log
book, pen and other things of little value.
The coordinates to the cache will be revealed by solving
Marvin's Problems below. The problems require the keywords that you
obtained by answering the Don't Panic 1-4 questions.
The ammo can, which is painted somewhat like, but not quite, but
pretty close to camouflage, is in a park. The park requires a fee
of $26 Altairian dollars a day or about $5 USD to enter. There is a
box to put your money in.
So..... Don't Panic! And please don't enter the coordinates
in your log.
Marvin's Problems
Solve the following problems to fill in A-G and reveal the final
location.
N30 A.BCD
W098 E.FG
Using the keyword obtained from the Don't Panic 1 cache, solve
the following for A:
1) Take the keyword and convert all letters to uppercase.
2) Perform a ROT13 on the keyword.
3) Take the individual letters from step 2 and convert them to
their ASCII decimal values. Sum the decimal values.
4) Divide the number from step 3 by 13 and drop the
fraction.
Using the keyword obtained from the Don't Panic 2 cache, solve
the following for B,C and D:
1) Take the keyword and convert all letters to uppercase.
2) Take the individual letters from step 1 and convert them to
their EBCDIC hexidecimal values. (If using the "cheat
sheet", drop the 0x)
3) For B,
Use the numeric portion of the 8th letters hexidecimal
value.
5) For C,
Use the numeric portion of the 6th letters hexidecimal
value.
6) For D,
Use the numeric portion of the 3rd letters hexidecimal value and
the numeric portion of the 4th letters hexidecimal value and sum
them.
Using the keyword obtained from the Don't Panic 3 cache, solve
the following for E:
1) Take the keyword and convert all letters to uppercase.
2) Take the individual letters from step 1 and convert them to
their ASCII binary values.
3) Count the number of 1's for the 2nd and 5th letters
Using the keyword obtained from the Don't Panic 4 cache, solve
the following for F and G:
1) Take the keyword and convert all letters to uppercase.
2) For F,
If A=1, B=2 and Z=26, take the individual letters from step 1
and convert them to their numeric values. Subtract the 4th letters
value from the 1st letters value.
3) For G,
If A=1, B=2 and Z=26, take the individual letters from step 1
and convert them to their numeric values. Sum the values.
