Geocache Description:

The cache will be found after a walk through a redwood canyon to a clearing on a hill. Your GPS readings will vary, but the description below provides clues to help you to find it.

I placed this cache just after the fall equinox and I was reminded of Basho's poem:

This road!
With no one going --
autumn evening.

Here, the road takes one to Willis Evans (Bates) Canyon -- a beautiful redwood grove with tall laurels and a seasonal stream. The trail rises to a clearing before continuing on to other parts of the forest along the side of the San Geronimo Ridge.

The cache is an ammo box, about three tenths of a mile (uphill) from the first Marin Open Space gate on Redwood Canyon Drive, near the corner of San Geronimo Valley Drive. The coordinates are averaged from different readings that varied significantly. Once you get to the general area, the clues below should help guide you:

Small trees
point to a stump:
the path up the hill.

Grasses, manzanita,
and a small tree --
what is that nearby?

Grass growing
between two rocks:
the stump ahead should not tempt you further.

Basho wrote a poem that also provides a hint:

When I look carefully
nazuma is blooming
beneath the hedge.

You can find the cache a relatively short distance from the main trail. You do not have to wade deep through the manzanita or enter the forest.

Do you hear the echos of someone walking up the trail, or wonder about names in a log book? Basho wrote:

Now being seen off,
now seeing off -- the outcome:
autumn in Kiso.
