Arboretum Letterbox Letterbox Hybrid

This cache has been archived.

J.A.R.S.: Thanks for the DNF report geo vet. It really is gone.
It had a good run, was out since 2002 (it started off as a bonus box to the Arboretum cache). And the stamp lasted for 8 years without deteriorating. There are now lots of geocaches and letterboxes in the park so I'll lay this listing to rest.

Geocache Description:

*** The cache is NOT at the posted co-ordinates. ***
Coords take you to a parking lot by the Arboretum Center. Follow the directions below.

Directions to the Arboretum and Map of the Arboretum 2008: New entrance - on College Ave East near Victoria Rd You can still park at the old entrance via Arboretum Rd (off of East Ring Rd) but the walk will be longer -- it's a nice walk through the park.

A letterbox, no trade items. Do not trade out the stamp. Leave it in the box.
Bring your own ink if you plan to stamp your letterbox passport/journal. Recommended colours - brown and green. For more info about LB hybrids see: http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#letterbox This is the original Arboretum letterbox (Nov 2002) that used to hide in the rhododendron collection, but the tree it was hiding in for 3+ years collapsed so it had to be relocated. I've found a new spot. This spot requires stealth especially during good-weather days because there will be a lot of walkers about. The hand-carved stamp is the original stamp, so many of you will have seen it before and if you keep a letterbox passport, you will have the image.

The coordinates take you to the parking lot right next to the Arboretum Centre. At the Centre walk up to the silver Queen Victoria, she's overlooking the cement pond. From Queen Victoria's back:
Walk to the gravel path, about 7 paces. You will see a white ash with a metal marker that reads “Fraxinus americanus WHITE ASH in memory of Harry Truss”. From here walk 10 paces northwest along the trail to a tree on the left marked “Betula papyrifera PAPER BIRCH in loving memory of Marie Therese”. Just ahead on your right is another paper birch commemorating the Shrine Club. Turn right at this tree and walk along the grassy path for 10 paces where you will come to a “SILVER MAPLE Acer saccharinum” on the right and further down another Acer saccharinum in memory of Thomas Carroll. Stand between 2 trees, facing the tree in memory of Thomas Carroll. On the left and other side of the grassy path is a cluster of hardwood trees (with no marker). 6–trunks. You'll find the camo’d little lock n lock 4”x3”x2”, at the bottom of the cluster. Cover it up well before you leave.

UPDATE (Nov 3): I have added an additional waypoint for the final location. I got to thinking that I want to make my letterboxes serve both the letterboxing community and the geocaching community. By adding an additional waypoint, geocachers who prefer finding boxes by coords can do so and those that prefer the traditional letterbox method can ignore the additional waypoint.

WINTER: box could be difficult to find when there's snow on the ground. Box could be frozen in.
