A 'fun' fact about Hele to entertain you whilst you're there.
In the 19th Century the character and growth of Hele was forged by two industrial influences.
Its situation on the river Culm and the pre-existing grist mill meant the village was perfectly poised for paper production. In 1762 hand paper-making was started in a redundant barn. The mill opposite the Fine Pair still makes paper for coffee filters and teabags today.
Also, with the countrywide expansion of the railways in the mid 1800s Hele became a centre for the collection and distribution of livestock and goods until 1965 when the station was closed down for good. Many of the buildings here resulted from the success and wealth generated by one of these two activities.
Now the town is home to 'a fine pair'. Things are looking up...
If anyone has a more interesting fact about this place please post in your log. I might even add it to the page!
