Geocache Description:

When: Saturday, September 5, 9:00am
Where: Chickaloon, AK
Why: Fun in the mountains in beautiful Chickaloon, Alaska
How: On foot, mountain bike or ATV

It is time once again for some real Alaskan adventure.
Come join us for a backpacking/hiking adventure into the mountains around Chickaloon, AK. We will be meeting at the King Mountain Lodge at 9:00am sharp and heading out to the trailhead for a day filled with fun and adventure. The Lodge is closed and for sale and we can leave some vehicles there as we will need to carpool to the parking area for the trailhead. 4x4 vehicles are best for the road into the trailhead as the parking is primitive and if the area is wet could be a bit tough in a low clearance 2 wheel drive vehicle. We will be hiking Castle Mountain. This is a 13 mile roundtrip hike that is doable by just about anyone. It is not technical, just a decent walk. Several people have inquired as to the route into Castle Mountain and Ridgeseeker provided a nice set of instructions to finding the easiest route. We will be hiking the trail and having lunch at the top of Castle Mountain. Bring some food to share as treats will be provided, but the more the merrier.

Bring your camera as this is a very scenic hike. Also bring your mountain bike or ATV if you want for the lower portion of the trail. There will be a large pasture where we can leave the vehicles and travel the final 4.5 miles on foot. I got a trail report that the lower trail is almost completely dry. You may want to bring hip-boots just in case, but from the report and the weather recently the trail should be mostly clear of water and mud holes at the lower elevations.

Come out early and stay late as there are two nice areas to camp near by. The King Mountain State Campground is a nice State run campground with full facilities and a fee for camping and the King River Recreational area is a gravel camping area with lots of room to camp but no facilities and has no fee for camping. If you have never taken the time to enjoy this part of Alaska, this is a good chance to see firsthand the grandeur of the mountains in Alaska.

We will not be hiking fast and this will be about a 12 hour trip. Come out and enjoy the backcountry with friends.

You will need to bring water, weather appropriate clothing, raingear, hiking shoes/boots, food for the trail and trekking poles if you use them. You may want to throw a headlamp in your pack just in case. If you bring ATVs they can be used to ferry people on the lower portion of the trail as well as mountain bikes. Once we reach the ravine near the falls we will have to travel on foot, but the ATVs and mountain bikes will provide a good ride the first portion of the trip.

See you in the hills.
