Libby Dam
The cache site is a scenic viewpoint near mile post 30.1 about 12 miles north of Libby Dam on Montana Highway 37.
The 90-mile long Lake Koocanusa reservoir is held back by Libby Dam.
The dam is 422 foot tall and 3055 feet wide and was constructed from nearly 8 million tons of concrete.
The name Koocanusa was derived from the names Kootenay River, Canada and USA.
Libby Dam provides flood protection for areas downstream.
It also provides hydroelectric power from five Francis-type turbines, each with a capacity of 120 million watts for a peak capacity of 600 million watts !!
That would be like 10 million 60 watt light bulbs all turned on at once !!
Stop at this spot to snap a few pics of the lake and grab a cache at the same time.
Happy Caching
