The McKee Sons was originally launched in 1945, as Marine Angel.
In 1952 the boat was acquired by American Steamship Company. At that time it was retrofitted and lengthened for the Great Lakes and renamed McKee Sons. The boat had another overhaul in 1979 when it was shortened and the steam engine changed over.
The boat is a self un-loading barge, and fast troop transport.
The Boat 510 feet, then added 123 feet, only to be reduced by 54 feet in length and has a maximum load capacity of 19,900 tons. It is powered by a 6,000 horsepower diesel engine.
