Mannen som gick upp i rök (1966) är den andra boken i serien Roman om ett brott som skrevs av författarduon Sjövall/Wahlöö.
Sjöwall/Wahlöö var ett internationellt känt svenskt författarpar, som författade tio polisromaner i serien Roman om ett brott med förste kriminalassistenten (senare kriminalkommissarien och chefen för riksmordkommissionen) Martin Beck som huvudperson.

Handling
Martin Becks semester blir förkortad när den svenske journalisten Alf Matsson plötsligt försvinner, vilket får hans förläggare att avslöja information som skulle vara generande för svenska regeringen. Eftersom Matson senast sågs i Ungern åker Beck dit. Den ungerska polisen förnekar att det är något konstigt med Matsons försvinnande, men samtidigt skuggar de Beck.

Maj Sjövall and Per Wahlöö were a common law husband and wife team of detective writers from Sweden. Together they conceived and wrote a series of ten novels (police procedurals) about the exploits of detectives from the special homicide commission of the national police in which the character of Martin Beck was the main protagonist.
Plot summary
Beck leaves his holiday and travels to Hungary to search for a missing journalist called Alf Matsson. After intersecting with the Budapest police and the criminal underground, he begins to wonder if Matsson ever entered the country
