Geocache Description:

The Great Eastlink Geocache Project #23 – Help! Help! Fire! Fire! The cache is a medium sized cache carefully and cunningly hidden in plain sight. The cache is technically a 'drive by' but access could be a little muddy if wet.

This cache was placed as a part of the Great Eastlink Geocache Project. The Project involved 25 Geocaching Teams from the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne who combined their efforts in July 2008 to create the largest cache series in Australia in which each cache in the series is individually owned by one team.

CFA is one of the world’s largest volunteer-based emergency services. There are around 58,000 volunteer members supported by over 400 career fire fighters and officers and more than 700 career support and administrative staff. Situated in Victoria, there are 2.5 million people and 150,182 square kilometres of land in the CFA area. This area includes more than 980,000 homes, covers all of rural Victoria and the provincial cities and towns (except State forests and National Parks). The area also includes more than a million residents in outer Melbourne suburbs such as Frankston and Dandenong, and key growth suburbs such as Cranbourne, Melton and Werribee.

CFA divide the land covered into nine CFA Areas and 20 Regions. Across these Areas there are over 1200 CFA brigades across the state and they carry out a wide range of duties. The brigades respond to a range of different incidents and broader activities include community education and fire investigation. The ties between CFA and state government, local government, industry and brigades are essential to the successful operation of CFA. As a community service organisation, CFA brigades are strongly supported by their local communities in responding to meet Victoria's fire safety and emergency management needs. With the work that CFA do and the number of firefighters and personnel involved, it’s little surprise that CFA have a significant training program. All of the firefighters are trained to maintain safety and effectively fight fires and attend a range of incidents. CFA have a number of instructors and training centres across Victoria. Our training centres are located at:

• Carrum (South East)

• Penshurst (Western District)

• Longerenong (near Horsham)

• Bendigo

• Sale (Gippsland)

• Wangaratta, and

• Fiskville (near Ballan)

The Carrum facility is located on the outer reaches of Carrum in an area which originally belonged to the South Eastern Treatment facility (which is still located nearby). The CFA utilises many of the features left by the facility for their training. Namely, a large separation tank which is now used as a smoke house for BA (Breathing Apparatus) training.
