Geocache Description:

Welcome to my Round Lyscombe Bottom caches. There is a climb up to the ridge after visiting the chapel but from then on the going gets easier and the second half is ALL downhill. There are no stiles. If you visit the notice board in the car park you will see your route clearly marked, although they have got the distance wrong. It’s 3.5 miles and 5.5 kms, not the other way round!

The Chapel, and later the adjoining house, were home to Monks and any pilgrims passing between Milton Abbey & Abbotsbury as early as the 12th Century. A farmer we met on our visit told us the monks were not charged rent for the buildings, but had to provide 12 fish a year from the nearby river to the landowner.

After the dissolution of the monastery at Milton Abbey in 1539, the monks left. Since then it has been a home, a bakehouse and a woodstore. The present landowners have restored the Chapel with the help of DEFRA and in 2007 80 people from the surrounding villages came together for the first service for 500 years.

It is still a very special place. Do go in and look round if you find it open as we did.

Here’s the homework for the cache. All done from the outside.

1. How many windows? = A
2. How many wooden planks make up the front door? = B
3. How many gravestones? = C
4. How many entrances? = D

Cache is a quarter of a mile away at
