Geocache Description:

A canoe or kayak will be used to visit the 3 stages of this cache.

THIS CACHE WAS SET ALONG WITH MADDOGS!

This is the long awaited PART II to the Clarion River Multicache! Thanks for waiting and sorry for the delay this spring. While not a lot of people visited the first cache, it was the truly dedicated geocachers. Hint - do not look for the same hiding places used in part I.

You will need a canoe or kayak to paddle the route of this multicache. This trip will take you down the beautiful Clarion River. Start at the Portland Mills Canoe Launch (N41 22.128 W078 49.713) or higher up the Clarion River. Shuttle your pickup car downstream, at least to the Irwin Hill Canoe Launch (N41 23.994 W078 54.353).
You should allow an afternoon for this trip. Bring a snack and your fishing pole. Your first waypoint is (N41 22.976 N078 49.956). This is the first of 2 stops on your way to the final ammo box cache at the end.
I would hate to be responsible for the loss of your electronics so please be sure to put your GPS in a zip lock bag. The unit will pick up satellite through the plastic.

Check this web site for water levels of the Clarion IN RIDGWAY. (visit link)
If the water level is above 7, the water is too high. Try another cache today.

This trip will take you through 3, Class 1 rapids called X, Y and Z. These letters are marked on the rocks just before each rapid. A novice should enter the rapids on the left, right and right for X, Y and Z, respectively. The danger of water should never be taken lightly. Use common sense and your Personal Flotation Device (PFD).
The water will be cold/cool before June and after October but spring and fall also have higher water and beautiful scenery.

All 3 stops on the river are just down stream of 3 great camping spots, although there are many nice places to stop over night. Things you should expect to see along the way – deer, ducks, mergansers, king fishers, great blue herons, green herons, bear, muskrats, beaver, turtles, geese, … and many large fish. If you are VERY lucky, you will see a Bald Eagle, especially on this section! We saw a Bald Eagle on both trips down the river to set the cache. This river was polluted for decades but the presents of these animals prove the Clarion is recovering. A few years ago, this river was named a Wild and Scenic River. Two miles down river from Irwin, you can have a famous hamburger and fries at the Hallton Hilton, if they are open.

We hope you get hooked on the river!
