Geocache Description:

This is an easy cache meant to show off some of the changes as Fort Ord is converted to civilian and university use. There are many excellent caches to be found throughout the old Army base.

Welcome to Griffin’s Lair:The Griffin, with the body of a lion and the wings & head of an eagle, has the properties of a guardian, signifying magnanimity & valor. From 1917 to 1994, the US Army’s Fort Ord, California, contributed significantly to the defense of the nation. With the 7th Infantry Division (Light), it was the core of the nation’s Rapid Deployment Force. Today, the proud, distinguished Army base is converting to civilian use, notably including several universities. Amongst these is the Griffin’s Lair, for the Griffin is the symbol of Golden Gate University (GGU). GGU was founded in 1901 in San Francisco. It has thrived with a campus in Monterey for over 30 years. Fort Ord is a model of the conversion process.
