Geocache Description:

Avast ye swabs! This be a UNDERWATER cache hidden a fathom down in the
murky depths of Kailua Bay. Ye must leave some waterproof booty to take booty or ye will be cursed!

*******************************************************************
PLEASE BE AWARE - YOU WILL NEED A MASK, SNORKEL, AND FLOTATION DEVICE TO ATTEMPT THIS CACHE. If you are not a strong OCEAN swimmer, or if it is HIGH TIDE, HIGH SURF, or LOW VISIBILITY, this cache difficulty increases to a 5+, 5+! We have had several Geocachers come close to drowning - This cache is safe to attempt ONLY if you are properly EQUIPPED AND PREPARED. Please read the ENTIRE cache description before attempting to find Flints Silver!
********************************************************************

Psst! Avast there!
Ye come seeking adventure in salty Kailua Bay, aye?
Sure you’ve come to the proper place... But keep a weather eye open, mates - for the coordinates above won’t lead you to the treasure true.
What treasure is it I speak of ye ask? Why blow me down! - it be none other than the silver left by Cap’n Flint on that accursed Treasure Island! Now, yer good friend John knows you read Jim’s telling of the tale. As you recall, the bar silver was left on Treasure Island at the end of Jim’s yarn. Well, it pained this old gentleman of fortune to leave all that silver behind, so me and some mates sailed back and took our share. Now, I be a man of fairness right and true, and I left a bit o’ coin behind for you. If there be a navigatin’ sailor amongst ye, give ‘em these numbers and they will steer ye to the proper spot:

N 21.23.9AB
W157.43.6C9

Belay yer bellyaching! Aye, ‘tis true, I have struck some of the numbers from the log. I struck the numbers to protect yer share from landlubbers who haven’t yet read the tale of Treasure Island! The missing numbers be as follows:

A = “1_ men on a dead man’s chest - Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum!”

B = the number of silver bars found in Billy Bones’ sea chest by Jim Hawkins and his mother + 5

C = The number of years that poor swab Ben Gunn was marooned on Treasure Island + 1

Have ye solved the cursed puzzle then matey? Properly warned ye be, says I: Flint’s Silver be a fathom underwater and a good way from land. If ye be a weak swimmer, ye best be taking a longboat or some other flotation aid with ye. Ol’ John also recommends the use of a mask and snorkel. The Treasure is attached to the bottom of the sea with a clip - be a good sailor and remove it with care. And finally, this cache be for WATERPROOF goodies only - and a curse on the swab who takes a fancy bauble and leaves naught but a wretched common rock in its place!

Sail with the tide!

- Yours Truly -
Long John Silver

A note from team Tiki: I’m stocking this cache with a waterproof log & pencils, a few unusual marbles, and some neat rocks from a New Zealand beach. Please be a good cacher and leave a marble/stone that is equally nifty as the one you take! :)

I was unsure how to rate the difficulty/terrain for this cache - you will need a flotation device if you are not a strong swimmer, and I recommend heading out at low tide. Remove cache with care – unclip it or it will break if you yank it up to the surface, and when you put it back take a deep breath and hide it as well as you found it. Watch out for muggles (er - landlubbers I mean) and happy hunting!

June 17th addition:

Got some distressing reports of cut fingers and lost coins - so I am going to up the difficulty rating for the cache a tad and re-iterate the importance of heading out at low tide (as there can be a 2 foot difference in depth!). Here is a site to check for tide levels:
(visit link)

Also, I HIGHLY recommend bringing a pair of cheap garden gloves with you to avoid cut fingers. And finally, take your time in hiding the cache as well (or better) than you found it. Remember, even though this place is crawling with muggles - they can't see what you are doing underwater. Take your time and have fun!

September 5th Re-Activation notes:

OK - As of Sept. 6th Flint's Silver is back up and running after the original cache was found and removed by a DLNR dive team making some repairs (more on that in a bit).
I made a new (and improved!) container for the cache, and having learned a bit from Flint's silver "Version 1", I've made some changes for "Version 2". First off - it is no longer a coin cache! Sorry coin lovers! It is now officially a MARBLE and ROCK cache! It seems that water would seep into the cache, and as sea-water and coins don't mix, I decided that pirates love marbles and rocks just as much as silver coins - and rocks and marbles are waterproof! I've stocked the cache with a handful of neat marbles and a few spiffy rocks I picked up in New Zealand.
The first cache was found by the DLNR because they had to replace *something* very close to the cache location that was yanked out of place by a geocacher (totally by accident!). PLEASE - DO NOT go tugging on anything that you may find floating near the cache site. You will know what I mean when you get there :)

Dec 13th, 2006 notes:

Had to temporarily disable cache as last visitor was unable to return the container to its hiding spot. Upped the terrain difficulty by a half star as folks seem to be risking life and limb out there! I can't stress enough the night-and-day difference in difficulty between doing this cache at low tide with a mask, snorkel, and body board (easy) vs. heading out with nothing in high tide/high surf (impossible - people have looked for hours with no luck). Take your time - plan for the tides and get some gear together and you will have a great time. I'll get the cache back in the water in a day or two (I have to wait for low tide too!)

Jan 11, 2008 re-activation notes. Had to replace the container due to underwater wear-and-tear. I've gone with a different type of container that may or may not have a sturdier clasp. It is still attached to the bottom of the sea with a clasp, so take your time and unclip before bringing to the surface. Also note that I've changed the cache from a "rock and marble" cache to a "anything waterproof that fits" cache. The new container is smaller than the previous ones. Good luck everyone!
