A small cache with easy parking and terrain.
This is the sixth in a Pawnee County Tour series designed to show off the town of Pawnee and its surrounding area. Lots to do and lots to investigate when you get off the interstates. You will find yourself in a ghost downtown. This little town once was thriving with several thousand folks. It died when the younger generation refused to pick cotton for a living and the railroad left. People in this area are still fierecly proud of their heritage. The town is named after one of the bands of the Pawnee Tribe. While here, take the time to read the inscription on the north side of the statue, a tribute to the way things were between some whites and reds, and maybe the way things should have been everywhere. Col. Walters was a Colonel in the fashion of the auctioneer colonels. He negotiated the oil leases for the Osage Indians in the hey-day of the Osage oil run. Walters designed and paid to have this statue built honoring him and his steadfast friend, Chief Bacon Rind. It is definitely one of a kind.
This cache contains some items that may come in handy should you have mechanical trouble in this little town, because a service station there is no more. So enjoy a ride through and to the "old" Oklahoma - yes, Virginia, folks really do still farm for a living!
