Geocache Description:

Most of you remember Hurricane Allison and the flooding it caused. Pretty much of the North Side was shut down, a lot of people were flooded out of their homes.

But do you remember the flood of the seventies when the whole Gulf Freeway and the South Loop was shut down.

Gulfgate Shopping City was opened back in 1955/56. A few years later, it became the first shopping mall to be fully airconditioned. People would come be here from all over and walk around inside feeling how great it is to be shopping in complete comfort.

Montgomery Wards was there, Joske's, Walter Pye, and a host of others.

Some time in the late 70's, while the 610 Loop/Gulf Freeway interchange was being built, a heavy flood came in and flooded Gulfgate City trapping a lot of cars in the underground parking at the mall. The floods were so heavy, they shut down the Gulf Freeway for the first time (similar to the Allison Flood). Traffic was stalled both on the Gulfgate Freeway and the 610 South Loop. People could not move. People downtown could not get on the Freeway.

Around 10PM that night, the highway department opened up a unfinished portion of the 610 Loop (North of I45) so that some people start moving. There were no cell phones back at that time. People would sleep in their cars or leave their cars on the main lanes of traffic and walked home.

Cars were still parked on the Gulf Freeway 24 hours later. I recall a Frito-Lay driver/truck stuck in the traffic on the Gulf Freeway and could not move. A couple of hours later after people getting hungry, the driver just opened the doors and started giving out what he had on his truck. What else could he do - charge full price, he simply started giving out the food/snacks.

I think I placed it where it could not get flooded. I hope a flood of this type doesn't take my cache if it ever floods again. Plenty of parking, no mossies. You will have to bring your own pen.
