Geocache Description:

A three-mile hike from the Buffalo Nickle to the site of a former gold mine.

A gold mine? On Catalina? Strange but true, and there were two, although neither one was very successful for very long. Renton Mine Road is a dirt road, closed to motor vehicles, which runs 1.9 miles starting along the paved road from Pebbly Beach to Mount Ada, ending at the site of this now-closed mine. You'll walk right past the Salt Point cache to get here, so bring a couple of bottles of water (and a pen!) and enjoy several hours of fun on "roads less traveled by."

(The mine has been filled in and fenced off; the cache is on a flat level spot. There are no accessible shafts or openings to be seen. No climbing or bushwhacking is required.)

The only folks who've been here lately are visitors and surveyors. You might find their handiwork useful...

All hiking off paved roads outside the city limits of Avalon requires a free permit from the Nature Conservancy office (open 8:30 - 3:30 daily). Hiking by daylight only.

Cache is a small, clear plastic tub. Original contents include log sheet, hand sanitizer, Ohio state quarter. BYOP.
