Bomb view Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Southerntrekker: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to recent logs I am archiving it.

The Geocache Maintenance guideline explains a CO's responsibility towards checking and maintaining the cache when problems are reported. Caches that have been archived for lack of maintenance will not be unarchived. This is explained in the Help Center.

Geocache Description:

A small cache hidden near the site of what looks like an old WW2 bomb! (Don't worry, it isn't actually a bomb!). Fairly easy find on a hillside with easy walking access and good views.
You can park on roads nearby when there isn't an event on at Alexandra Palace. Also near Alexandra Palace mainline train station and local busses.

A small cache hidden near a 'bomb' in Alexandra Park near the pitch and putt course, with views of much of North East London.

The cache itself is a smallish Tupperware container with a logbook, pencil and a few small items.

The large metal object (which the park managers mow around so is clearly visible) is thought to be most likely an anchor point for an airship placed there probably around 1900, which is when airships started being developed, most notably in highbury, a few miles from here, by Stanley Spencer. A famous airship, the r-101, was flown over London in 1929, and was photographed over Alexandra palace. It sadly crashed in France on it's maiden overseas voyage the following year!

Another theory (on good authority from a local history website) is that it was a barrage balloon anchor point. It may have served both purposes.
