Geocache Description:

Togakushi
is a well-known spiritual training place associated with En no Gyoja,
Gyoki, and Kukai. The distance from Naoetsu to Mr. Togakushi is over
50km, and its altitude is 1911m. Shinran would have divine power or
something for climing up and down the mountain everyday in such a
distance from Naoetsu.

On the way to the Togakushi Shrine, there is an old Japanese inn called Takei Ryokan, which was used as one of the temple lodgings (shukubo). At the entrance you can read words curved on the stone monument, which said that Shinran (1192-1333), the founder of the Jodo-shinshu buddism in the early Kamakura period, stayed at this inn.

Shinran at the age of 40 stayed there for 100 days in 1212 -- the same
year when his great master Honen (Genku) died in Kyoto at the age of
80. In relation to Togakushi, Shinran, as part of his religious training, climed up Mt. Togakushi everyday from Naoetsu. Mt. Togakushi is a well-known spiritual training place associated with En no Gyoja, Gyoki, and Kukai. The distance from Naoetsu to Mr. Togakushi is over 50km, and its altitude is 1911m. Shinran would have divine power or something for climing up and down the mountain in such a distance from Naoetsu.

Shinran would have thought that there was no point in returning to Kyoto without the presence of his deceased master Honen, and he remained Shinano and Kouzuke in Nagano, engaging in prayer mission to Buddha, “Nenbutsu Fukyo.” After this period of being exiled in Echigo, Shinran chose to stay at Takei Inn for 100 days.
