I remember 1943. I was a trainee pilot at Ephrata Army Air Base. Living in the Army Air Corps worst form of torture: the 12-man hutment. Slap down a concrete slab and add canvas over a wood frame: cold in the winter and hot in the summer. At least I had a window that looked east over the airfield. I kept my Lucky Strikes and the letters from my best girl Marlene in an old ammo box to keep them away from the mice and Frank the Buffalo who slept in the next bunk. I remember leaning out the window having a smoke; careful to keep the ashes off the big sagebrush bush below the window. Tinder dry it could ignite in an instant like everything else on the base that summer. I wonder if that old box is still there?
